In June 2020 and 2021, the New Leaders Initiative (NLI) hosted the third and fourth annual youth poetry slams, “Raising Our Voices for Environmental Justice.” Due to restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, the poetry slam was held virtually and closed to the public. The event was held for youth from the New Voices Are Rising Summer Climate Justice Youth Leadership Academy, one of NLI’s partner organizations. Poets shared pieces about environmental and social justice issues in their communities.
On March 7, 2020, at Urban Adamah in Berkeley, we held a food justice event. Storytellers shared stories of what food justice means to them. We sought to provide a unique platform where both young people and adults could express their activism and ideas. There was a live DJ and free catered lunch provided by Food Shift. This event was co-hosted by the New Leaders Initiative, Herbicide-Free Campus, and Real Food Media.
On June 26th at SoleSpace in downtown Oakland we held our second annual youth poetry slam, “Raising Our Voices for Environmental Justice.” Poets shared pieces about environmentalism, social justice, clean air and water, animal rights, and more issues affecting our communities in the Bay Area. This event was co-hosted by the New Leaders Initiative, Youth Impact Hub and New Voices Are Rising and sponsored by CLIF bar.
On February 7, 2019, from 6:30-8 pm at SoleSpace in downtown Oakland (1714 Telegraph Ave), we put on an event called “Path to Purpose: How to Get Paid for Social Justice and Environmental Activism.” This event was co-hosted by the New Leaders Initiative, New Voices Are Rising, and Youth Impact Hub. It featured a Q & A session with environmental professionals from our community and then a speed networking activity with other youth and mentors from the Bay Area. DJ and free food included!
In July 2018, we held an event titled “Raising Our Voices for Environmental Justice: a Youth Poetry Slam” at SoleSpace (1714 Telegraph Ave) in downtown Oakland. This event was co-hosted by New Voices are Rising, Youth Impact Hub, and Rooted in Resilience and sponsored by Clif Bar.
In March 2018, we had an event titled “What Does Food Justice Mean to You?” that took place in a garden in Oakland. This event was co-hosted by Girls Inc, Oakland Food Policy Council and Phat Beets.
In October 2017, we hosted a networking mixer event for youth titled “The Road to Social Justice Activism and Environmental Careers.” This networking and mixer event for youth took place at Sole Space in downtown Oakland.
